Fake GraveyardMakeshift Backyard Cemetery

Halloween is here and you want to do your best to impress trick and treaters. How about turning your yard into a makeshift graveyard? This could be a fun project for your entire family and your tombstones will definitely attract your neighbor’s attention.

How It’s Done

A great way to get your yard Halloween ready is by putting up some fake tombstones.  Get a couple of big enough pieces of Styrofoam, or foam insulation (Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)) and cut out the shape of a tombstone. The pieces should be at least 2 inches thick. Use gray spray paint, acrylic or latex paint and a black marker to decorate the tombstones accordingly. Get dark gray latex paint for the background of your tombstone and light gray, black, or brown for the highlights. Also make sure you have some shades of green paint for moss, or use either model railroad turf or real dried moss to give your tombstones that aged look. Use a knife or blade to carve out the letters, just be careful while doing it. Don’t forget to cut some cracks into your tombstones. Once you put them in your yard, secure them so they do not fly away. You can also lean some against your fence. If that sounds like to much work for you several online retailers as well as craft shops are selling Tombstone decorating sets starting for around $10.

Add Other Elements

You can make your backyard graveyard even scarier by propping up fake skeletons and putting fake bones around the grave sites. Maybe even get a fake hand to stick out of the ground? Some fake spider webs around your yard’s fence will also help with the spooky appeal.
